PHYSICAL EDUCATION ASSISTANCE
LAUSD mandates elementary school students receive 200 minutes of physical education every two weeks. In 5th grade, students are required to take a Physical Fitness Test (PFT). The state-designated PFT is the FITNESSGRAM.
At Third Street School, the grade-level teachers are responsible for their students’ physical education; no funding is provided by the district for a dedicated Physical Education instructor.
With this lack of a district-funded instructor for physical education, Friends of Third funds a full-time playground/physical education supervisor. This coach oversees the safety and security of children during recess periods, as well as provides guidance and structure to assist grade-level teachers for physical education enrichment from week-to-week.
Friends of Third also allocates a budget for new playground and PE equipment each year, with equipment chosen by our coach to best complement grade-appropriate yard activities.
