In 2006, an exuberant Korean-American Third Street School mother noticed a problem at the school: Due to language and cultural differences there was a communication divide between the Korean families (which numbered at the time well above 60% of the school) and everyone else. She felt that the only way to close this gap was to bring the different ethnic groups together for a day of festivities called Korean Cultural Day. The day was designed for everyone in the Third Street community to learn about Korean culture. It did that and much more: Non-Koreans learned about the colorful and cohesive identity of the Korean people but on a grander scale the Korean families also learned about the diverse ethnic communities that live within Third Street School.
It was a great success. The spirit and energy of that day resonates throughout the campus to this day. It has since led to the creation of International Cultural Day, which celebrates the multi-cultural community that is Third Street Elementary School. It has also become one of Third Street’s biggest fundraising events, while also incorporating an educational component for the school's pupils.
Each year, students, performers and celebrities donate their time to entertain the Third Street Community. In addition, many of the kids from the school also perform their music and dance entertainment. The composition of such an ethnically diverse student body (8% Hispanic, 9% African- American, 27% White and more than 50% Korean) brings many different booths with foods, arts, crafts and performances that will be showcased on the Third Street grounds.
Admittance into the event is free. However, tickets purchased at the event enable you to sample the foods and activities at the various booths.
International Cultural Day takes place in the Autumn each year. Please check back here for more information on the next one!
