To the Book Fair and Beyond!

Picture
The week of December 5th was an out-of-this-world book buying experience. The Scholastic Book Fair brought books right to our students with a wide selection at affordable prices.   Every class visited the book fair for students to see the selection, make purchases or create a wish list.  Teachers created wish lists which parents used to stock their child's classroom shelves.  It was the perfect place to do holiday shopping.

The library was packed every morning before school, recess and after school with parents and students taking advantage of the great deals.  We couldn't keep enough erasers and and pens in stock for the kiddos.  Many teachers had their wish lists fulfilled and still parents looked for more ways to help their classrooms.  Some parents generously donated books to the Toy Drive.

On December 8th we stayed open late for Family Night so families could shop, indulge in an In-N-Out burger, and enjoy the Winter Concert.  Heat lamps kept people cozy while they browsed the drawing items in the cafeteria.  All proceeds raised help support our library and school literacy programs.

Overall $22,000 worth of books, erasers and posters were sold, raising over $5,200 for the library and reading programs.  Thank you to all who shopped!

Thank you to all our 2011 Book Fair volunteers.  Our great success rests on the shoulders of those parents who gave their time to sell, stock and supervise during the week.  Take a moment to thank them when you see them at school: April Yoo, Brett Thomas, Alexa Kent, Diane Sherwood, Clare Ashbrook, Roy Forbes, Sean Hunter, Kim Wright, Jessica Campos, Julie Kim, Cynthia Arnold, Juliana Arnold, Nancy Drymon, Mike August, Louisa Stannow, Anna Song, Niloo Eskandari, Kathryn Pitt, Francis Okwu, Peter Wagner, Dan Lavery, Fred Echeverria, Nancy Ziehl, Patrick Chandler, Deanna Hughes, Jeri Norris, Lynn Easley, Rebecca Wink, and HJ Paik. Special Thanks to Sean Hunter for lending us his costumes.

Even though the next Book Fair is not until December 2012 we're making our volunteer lists now.  Join other parent volunteers to help students during their class visits or help ring up sales.  We have a shift that can work for anyone: morning, noon or night –- we invite you to join us.  Bagging, ringing up sales or helping with selection, there is a job for everyone at the biggest PTA fundraiser of the year.  Costumes optional.  Contact Alysoun Higgins and Tim Hill at ptainfo@thirdstreetpta.org if you're interested.
